International Congress of Phonetic Sciences (ICPhS)

The International Congress of Phonetic Sciences (ICPhS) takes place every four years. It is held under the auspices of the International Phonetic Association and provides an interdisciplinary forum for the presentation of basic and applied research in the phonetic sciences. The main areas covered by the Congress are speech production, speech acoustics, speech perception, speech prosody, sound change, phonology, sociophonetics, language typology, first and second language acquisition, forensic phonetics, speaking styles, voice quality, clinical phonetics and speech technology. The last four Congresses were each attended by 800 - 1000 participants from all over the world.

The 21st ICPhS will be held in Victoria, BC, Canada, in 2027.

The 20th ICPhS was held in Prague in 2023.

Proposals for the organization of future ICPhS

Bids for future ICPhS organisation need to be prepared before the previous ICPhS Congress and defended at the ICPhS venue before the Permanent Council for the Organisation of the International Congress of Phonetic Sciences. The deadline for the submission of bids for the 22nd ICPhS to be held in 2031 is 30 May 2027.
