General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) notice

The International Phonetic Association (IPA) collects personal information from current and former members including:

  • your name
  • your postal address and/or email address and/or website link, if you have provided us with these
  • your membership subscriptions

For student members we also retain:

  • Evidence of student status
  • University or place of study
  • Degree and name of the course
  • Attendance mode (full-time/part-time)
  • Course end date
  • [Optionally] email/name of supervisor

These data are held and processed for administrative purposes, such as communicating with members about the IPA’s business, maintaining the IPA’s records, and complying with any legal obligations. The IPA passes on to our publisher, Cambridge University Press (CUP), the names of all current members for the purpose of managing JIPA subscriptions. In addition, for members who opted for a membership including print copies of JIPA, postal addresses are passed on to CUP. We also provide a list of the names of our current members to the organisers of the quadrennial ICPhS to enable them to provide a registration fee discount for IPA members.

The IPA also collects and processes personal information in order to administer awards, such as the IPA Student Awards and the Gösta Bruce Scholarships. The names and contact details for successful awardees are shared with the relevant conference organisers. The IPA also holds a permanent record of the names of entrants to the IPA Examination and of the grading of each examination.

Should you at any time wish to review the details we hold about you and have them amended, please log in to the IPA website (https://www.internationalphoneticassociation.org/user/ipa-profile) and use the self-service interface. Should you wish to have your details deleted from our membership database, please contact the IPA Secretary.
