The International Phonetic Association warmly congratulates the Phonetic Society of Japan (PSJ) on its centenary in 2026.
Founded in 1926, the PSJ has made a distinguished contribution to phonetic scholarship in Japan and internationally. For a century, it has fostered research, scholarly exchange, education, and collaboration, bringing together researchers, teachers, students, and scholars from related fields.
Through its publications and academic activities, the Society has made a significant contribution to the advancement and dissemination of phonetic knowledge, as well as to the teaching and promotion of the International Phonetic Alphabet.
The PSJ has maintained a close and valued relationship with the International Phonetic Association, reflecting our shared commitment to phonetic science, education, and communication across languages and communities.
To mark this important milestone, IPA President Professor Katerina Nicolaidis has sent a congratulatory message to the Society, expressing the Association’s appreciation for its achievements and its warmest wishes for the century ahead.
The IPA joins the PSJ and its members in celebrating 100 years of achievement and looks forward to many more years of fruitful collaboration.
The centenary celebrations will take place during the PSJ’s 40th General Meeting at Waseda University in Tokyo on 12–13 September 2026.
