The IPA announces 41 student members receiving IPA Student Awards and 29 IPA members (student members, unemployed members, members under age 35, members from countries where funding resources are limited) receiving Travel Bursaries and Gösta Bruce Scholarships for participation in ICPhS 2023.

A total of 140 applications were received, 74 for IPA Student Awards and 66 for Travel Bursaries/Gösta Bruce Scholarships. Following paper evaluation, 41 papers were selected for the IPA Student Awards and 29 for the Travel Bursaries/Gösta Bruce Scholarships. The six highest scoring papers from the latter category were selected for the Gösta Bruce Scholarships: three papers on prosody and three on other areas of phonetics as per the terms of the Gösta Bruce Memorial Fund.

IPA Student awards cover the early-bird student registration fee and accommodation expenses. For ICPhS 2023, they are for an amount of up to 600 GBP. Travel Bursaries and Gösta Bruce Scholarships subsidize students’ travel costs. This year awards are for up to 500, 400, or 200 GBP, depending on travel distance. The Gösta Bruce Scholarships are partially funded by the Gösta Bruce Memorial Fund, which honors the previous IPA president.

In total, 70 awards are offered by the Association for ICPhS 2023 for a total budget of 34400 GBP (24600 for Student Awards and 9800 for Travel Bursaries/ Gösta Bruce Scholarships).

The International Phonetic Association is offering IPA Student Awards, Travel Bursaries and Gösta Bruce Scholarships for ICPhS 2023. The Gösta Bruce Scholarships are supported by donations to the Gösta Bruce Memorial Fund, which honors the previous IPA president. Details on eligibility, financial benefits and evaluation criteria are available below.

The application period is from April 1st to April 10th 2023. Awards will be announced by May 2nd, giving awardees time to register for the ICPhS in advance of the 5th May unique early-bird registration deadline (see https://www.icphs2023.org/ for details).

To apply for an Award, eligible members of the IPA should log in to the website with their membership details and fill in the application form here. Candidates should upload their paper, notification of acceptance and reviews. Awards will be made available to successful applicants in advance of the ICPhS on receipt of the relevant supporting documentation (further details of which will be provided to awardees).

Objective

To support student and other eligible members as described below to present their research at ICPhS.

Types of Awards and Financial benefits

1. Student Award: up to 40 awards for an amount of up to GBP600 towards costs of early-bird student member conference registration fee and accommodation.
2. Travel Bursary and Gösta Bruce Scholarship - up to GBP600 towards travel costs to ICPhS. The IPA aims to support as many eligible members as possible within the budget allocated for Travel Bursaries and Gösta Bruce
   Scholarships.

Eligibility

IPA Student Awards and Gösta Bruce Scholarships are granted to student members of the Association who are first or sole author of a paper or poster.

Travel Bursaries are granted to Association members who are first or sole author of a
paper or poster from any of the following groups:
(i) student members,
(ii) unemployed members,
(iii) members under age 35,
(iv) members from countries where funding resources are limited.

Proof of student or other relevant status must be submitted with the application.

Eligible members can apply for either a Student Award or a Travel Bursary/Gösta Bruce Scholarship.

Selection criteria

Papers of award applicants are reviewed by the IPA Committee on Conference Sponsorships and Student Awards. The highest scoring papers of student members from the Travel Bursary type of Awards will be selected for the Gösta Bruce Scholarships, with the stipulation that at least half of those scholarships will be awarded for research on prosody (and that first or sole authors of those papers are not previous Gösta Bruce Scholarship recipients). The remaining awards will be made based primarily on paper scores, but with additional attention to distribution to members from a variety of countries.

The Committee on Conference Sponsorships and Student Awards announces the following IPA Student Awards for 2021-2022.

The IPA has granted an IPA Student Award to a student member participating in the Phonetics and Phonology in Europe 2021 conference, 21-23 June 2021, Barcelona, Spain. The recipient of the Award is Ander Beristain of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Five student members have received IPA Student Awards for their participation in the 1st International Conference on Tone and Intonation (TAI) 2021, 6-9 December 2021, Sonderborg, Denmark. They are: Aljawharah Alzamil (University of York), Maria Lialiou (University of Cologne), Shuting Liu (University of Melbourne), Simona Sbranna (University of Cologne), and Yan Sun (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign).

Another six student members have received IPA Student Awards for their participation in the Speech Prosody 2022 conference, 23-26 May 2022, Lisbon, Portugal. They are: Lena Borise (Hungarian Academy of Sciences), Marita K.
Everhardt (University of Groningen), Jiyoung Jang (University of California, Santa Barbara), Anindita Nath (University of Texas at El Paso), Simona Sbranna (University of Cologne), and Liang Zhao (University of York).

The International Congress of Phonetic Sciences (ICPhS) is one of the largest and one of the earliest conferences for all aspects of phonetic research.

Usually held every four years there were 19 meetings since its inauguration in 1932. The 16th ICPhS in Saarbrücken was the first that made and maintained its proceedings online. With the financial support of the Max Mangold estate the Phonetics group at Saarland University in Saarbrücken have made the proceedings of earlier congresses available as searchable pdf documents. This project is meant as a complement to the digitisation of the ICPhS proceedings by the International Phonetic Association (IPA).

The IPA is co-sponsoring the "Lacerda 120 - The 5th International Workshop on the History of Speech Communication Research" (https://lacerda120.wordpress.com/), to be held in Porto, Portugal, May 29, 2022. IPA is offering up to two Awards covering the student registration fees. Applicants for these Awards must be:

1. sole author or first and presenting author of an oral presentation, and
2. an eligible student member of the IPA: student member, unemployed member, member under age 35, or member from a low-income-level country.
