Sībawayh characterized assimilation in Classical Arabic of the 8th century under two modalities, ʔidɣām 'total assimilation', which occurs in segments that share the same cavity and exit or adjacent exits, and muďāraʕah 'resemblance', which occurs in segments that share only some features but all their features.
