This study investigates the relationship between the acoustic features of short steady-state vowels and perceived vowel quality, and describes formulae that estimate perceived vowel quality from the speech signal and vice versa. A subsequent evaluation showed these formulae to be more exact than the individual judgements of eight out of ten trained phoneticians.
