The purpose of this study was to further specify a model of consonant place of articulation perception organized around the neutral vowel. The perceptual effects of different spectral and temporal acoustic parameters on consonant identification in CV syllables were investigated. The results confirm the specific status of the neutral target. When looking at the formant characteristics from this target, consonant identification depends on the position of the formant transition, above or below a reference line. Further, the present data show that the target value from which transition direction is calculated is located at the start of prevoicing.
