This paper is a short overview of the symposium "Case studies in phonetic explanation." Each of the participants presented a case study of a phonological pattern that one might "explain" in terms of phonetic factors, such as perception or production limitations. And then discussed whether it seems like a good idea to make the explanatory move, and what kind of phonetic/phonological theories are good at accommodating explanations.
