The intervocalic voicing of stops in Romance usually begins by /k/. This seems to be in blatant contradiction with the fact that velar stops are intrinsically less voiced. A reassessment of all relevant facts - typological generalizations, Romance diachronic data and their traditional interpretation - is the first step towards an explanation.
