Our research on specifying more precisely the intonation structure in Czech is developed on the basis of synthesised speech signal systematically altered in F0-pattern and evaluated by listening tests. The relation stress unit - tone unit is considered to be a primary relevant factor. F0-patterns of individual stress unit within the tone unit represent the quality distinguishing the tone unit variability, and their description is usable as a means for the description of intonation-based functions. As a relevant feature the position of a stress unit in a tone unit has to be taken into account.
