We analyse here the prosodic structures of spoken algebraic equations read by one French speaker. The rhythmic structures of the utterances are characterised using the “performance structure” paradigm introduced by Grosjean et al. We show that the observed performance structures are qualitatively largely determined by syntactic structure and quantitatively largely influenced by phonotactic constraints especially for the attachment of mathematical operators. These data are then confronted to a superpositional model of intonation.
