IPA charts and sub-charts in four fonts

This page offers downloadable IPA charts with different fonts, resolutions, formats, and sections of the whole chart. The full Kiel, Doulos, and DejaVu charts here are virtually the same as the 2015 pdf charts on the Association’s website except that they are dated 2020 and have updated copyright symbols. See the Association’s chart webpage for more information about, and comparisons of, the fonts used in these charts. The chart sections and SVG image files here replace the 2005 versions on the Association’s site.

We now also offer the chart in a TeX TIPA Roman (serif) font. This font has been selected by the IPA’s Alphabet Charts and Fonts committee from the fonts created by Prof. Rei as best representing the IPA’s symbol set. The unitipa font used is a version of tipa8, the initial product of the committee’s current project to produce a Unicode-compliant version of the original font. We note one difference between the symbols in this font and our standard IPA Kiel symbols: the uvular symbols based on upper-case R have a large curved serif, a kind of swash. This shape dates back to very early versions of the International Phonetic Alphabet, though it has otherwise largely been replaced in modern fonts.

Tooltips charts: These new versions of the charts allow you to see full information about each symbol/diacritic by hovering over it. Tooltip charts don’t work in all browser-integrated pdf-viewers; best to use off-line Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader. The same information is provided in the “list of symbols and diacritics” files.
